In Memoriam: Bob Molenaar, 90 jaar lang Jonge Socialist.

Vele JS’ers hebben in onze huidige tijd goede ervaringen met IUSY gehad. De toffe zomerkampen in Oostenrijk en Kroatië, verschillende workshops en scherpe debatten over fundamentele sociaaldemocratisch thema’s als emancipatie en democratie hebben ook in deze tijd vele van ons geïnspireerd. IUSY heeft ook veel betekend in landen waar (sociaal)democratie niet zo vanzelfsprekend is als hier. Door IUSY hebben vele jongeren ook daar de kans gekregen zichzelf socialist te voelen. Voor mij persoonlijk is het IUSY-zomerkamp in 2011 in Oostenrijk nog altijd het meest bijzonder evenement gevonden dat ik als JS’er heb mogen meemaken.

Bob Molenaar was ook een nog altijd actief en zeer gewaardeerd lid van de PvdA Den Haag. De afgelopen jaren heb ik op een aantal momenten met Bob Molenaar kunnen praten over de vroegere tijden van de IUSY en de jonge socialisten in zijn tijd. Vol passie vertelde hij over de brieven die hij stuurde naar de IUSY en de antwoorden die hij altijd kreeg. Het besef dat er nog zoveel jongeren bezig waren met internationale solidariteit raakte hem maar gaf hem ook energie.

Dat heeft mij ontzettend geraakt en geïnspireerd.

Op de 1-mei viering in 2011 heb ik samen met toenmalig Internationaal Secretaris van de JS Eva Ruijters en Jeltje van Nieuwenhoven, fractievoorzitter van de PvdA in Den Haag de erepenning aan Bob Molenaar mogen uitreiken vanwege zijn 65-jarig jubileum als lid van de PvdA. Ook toen sprak hij de waardering uit voor wat wij als JS’ers doen met en voor de sociaaldemocratie. Hij riep ons op ons altijd hard te maken voor democratische rechten voor iedereen op deze wereld.

De Jonge Socialisten zijn dit weekend een icoon verloren. Een man die – in een tijd waarin dat niet vanzelfsprekend was – inzag dat internationale samenwerking onder jongeren goed was voor de ontwikkeling van een sociale en democratische wereld. Bob Molenaar is een inspirator voor vele Jonge Socialisten. Daar mogen we hem zeer dankbaar voor zijn. Fatihyah Abdi verwoorde een tijd terug het gevoel bij Bob Molenaar: ‘mocht ik ooit 90 worden dan hoop ik dat ik net zo idealistisch blijf als Bob Molenaar’.

Bob Molenaar was al 90 jaar lang een echte Jonge Socialist en zo zullen wij hem ook herinneren de komende 90 jaar en daarna.

In Memoriam: Bob Molenaar, socialist youth, 90 years of age

 

Last weekend, 90 year old Bob Molenaar has passed away. Not many members of the current JS know who Bob Molenaar was, but he has played a major part in the history of international socialism, and he has influenced the lives of young socialists all over the world.

Bob Molenaar is the founder of IUSY, (the International Union of Socialist Youth) the worldwide organization our JS is a branch of. He founded IUSY on September 30th 1946 in cooperation with other youths in Montrouge, a banlieue of Paris. The issues topping their list back then were decolonization and the unification of Europe, in spite of the fact that many of the political parties linked to their respective youth parties were far from happy with that, or at the very least did not consider those issues to be priorities at all. Soon after the union was formed, international youth camps followed in Austria, Sweden and Denmark. From the start, IUSY was miles ahead of their partners back home, because in the early years after the war IUSY already had members from Asia and Africa. Among participants to IUSY’s Europe course at the Meenthouse in Blaricum were people who would later gain great renown like Max van der Stoel and Helmuth Schmidt. IUSY courses and summer camps like those in Austria and Croatia have continued to inspire and educate many JS members even to this day. IUSY has also given youths from countries where social democracy isn’t a part of the mainstream political system a chance to truly feel like they’re socialists. The 2011 IUSY summer camp in Austria has been the most impressive experience in my career as a JS member.

Besides from his work for IUSY, mr Molenaar has always been a very active and well respective member of The Hague’s Labour Party, the PvdA, and these last few years I have had the opportunity on several occasions to talk with him about IUSY’s early days and the JS in his youth. He told me that he was still having correspondence with the people from IUSY, and how much energy he got from those young people fighting for international solidarity and social democracy. These conversations have touched and inspired me greatly.

At the labour day celebration in 2011 I have had the pleasure of awarding Bob Molenaar with a pin of honour because of his 65 years of membership of the PvdA, together with Jeltje van Nieuwenhoven and Eva Ruijters who was international secretary to the JS back then. Bob Molenaar then pronounced his appreciation for what we as JS members do with and for social democracy and urged us all to keep fighting for the democratic rights of all people in every nation in the world. He told us it is our duty as the next generation.

The JS have lost an icon this weekend. A man who, in a time when it didn’t seem obvious, saw that international cooperation between youths is vital for the development for a social and democratic world. A real inspiration for many young socialists, and someone we owe a huge debt of gratitude. Fatihyah Abdi put my thoughts into great words: “If I ever reach the age of 90, I can only hope to stay as idealistic as Bob Molenaar”. Bob Molenaar has been a true young socialist for 90 years and this is how we will remember him, for the 90 years to come and long after.
